Chine log

The stringers fit the boat quite well.  I shaved the side rail to take the bottom.  Next up is to glue the stringers in and fit the bottom butt joint support in place.  Coming along nicely.

Cutting the chine log with my second most favorite tool, the electric planer.  My most favorite tool is the belt sander!!!

This is George rounding over the corners of the stringers that will sit in the bottom of the boat.

Stringers

We got the old stringers cleaned up( what was left of them.) and new wood scarfed to them.  We decided to use the old ones because they have the original curve still stuck in the wood.  That should give us the same bow configuration, which on this boat, is different than a standard cates.

That angle bend is just a clamp that slipped during the test fit.
This is where the stringers came from.
Got them glued up and test fitted.   Looks good.

Looks like a boat

I got the rails fitted to the frame.  I had to add an extra 6 inches to the rails because the 12 foot section that I made didn't fit.

Everything glued in.

Stringers and rails

I got the stringers cut out.  We're using select pine for this.  That's probably not the best wood  but it's easily available and has no knots.  We ran it thru the planer to get the rails down to 1/2 inch.  The stringers came out to 1x5/8.  I used my table top sander to make the scarfs.  Everything is now 12 feet long.

What we have

So, here we are.  This is what's left.  We have a keel, a DB case and the stem.  Well, most of the stem.  George and I spent about two hours removing the rest of the bow section.  We were hoping to get the panels off intact but that didn't happen.  We're starting from scratch.

 We  made a transom.

We also did stringers and the side shear/chine log.

On the forms

Got all the forms cut out and installed in the proper location.  I had to modify the top of two because they hit the mast step and the bow stem.  Not going to remove those parts as they are part of the keel.
Rear view.  The braces will support the side rails of the boat.

I put the boat on the forms and it fit like a glove.  It's about 3/4 of an inch off but that is because the forms don't have any notches in them to take the stringers.  I'm impressed.   They built this boat mostly to the plans.

We're going to have to make all new stringers so the next step is to make the transom and take the bow planks off the boat to get a better fit for those stringers.   Also go to make the side rails.

Fitting to the gig.

                                                                 New transom wood.
Inside of the bow.  We are going to try and use the stringers.
